Forced to eat? Or something deeper? This evoked a few unsettling memories, Rachael.
I don’t know, Chris. I just wanted to capture the idea, leaving the interpretation totally open. I felt a sense of poignancy and helplessness coming through as I wrote it.
This is definitely a poem that could inspire a story. As Chris pointed out, it leaves the reader wondering. Definitely an unsettling piece.
Yes it could inspire a longer piece – I can see that now. I wanted to capture a simple moment. I have a vision now of a very clean child and an empty plate, feeling alone and unloved. Not a happy haiku 😦
